COMMUNITY and SCHOOL
Cardinal Spellman High School is a coeducational school under the direction of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York. It was opened in 1959, is located on a thirteen-acre site near the Bronx-Westchester border, and serves the urban communities of the Bronx, Manhattan, and lower Westchester. It is a college-preparatory school for young men and women in grades 9 through 12. This year the enrollment is 1558 and the Faculty numbers 96.
Accreditation has been received from the NewYork State Board of Regents and from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The Library has 19,000 volumes and subscribes to 70 periodicals.

The diploma is awarded after the successful completion of all courses.
The recommendation accompanying a transcript is derived from the counselor's knowledge of the student and from reports made by selected l1th- and 12th-grade teachers.
PROGRAM of STUDIES
Cardinal Spellman High School offers a varied program of studies and activities designed to meet the needs of college-bound young men and women. The objective of the instructional program is to create an academic climate within which students will develop their full potential. Each student's program includes both required and elective courses.
Students showing superior abilities may take Honors Courses in certain subjects; these Honors courses have enriched and accelerated syllabi. Additionally, qualified students may take Advanced Placement (AP) Courses for possible college credit or placement. Honors Courses are offered in Religion, English, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, and Foreign Languages. Advanced Placement Courses are offered in English, European History, United States History, Computer Science, Calculus AB, Biology, and Spanish Literature.
HONORS
Honors are awarded for each semester and for each year: First Honors to students with averages of 90.0 or higher and Second Honors to students with averages between 85.0 and 89.9.
The passing grade at Cardinal Spellman High School is 65.
Prior to the 1997-98 academic year, the passing grade was 70.
WEIGHTING SYSTEM
To recognize the greater achievement of students taking more difficult courses, certain
weighting factors are used in computing the student's average:
for AP courses: actual grade X 1.06
for Honors courses: actual grade X 1.04
for certain specials*: actual grade X 1.02
for regular courses: actual grade X 1.00
*(when one course is more demanding, as in the case of
Regents Chemistry vs General [non-Regents] Chemistry)
