HISTORY OF CARDINAL SPELLMAN HIGH SCHOOL

Cardinal Spellman High School, an Archdiocesan High School under the direction of the Archdiocese of New York, was organized in September, 1959 in temporary quarters. The new building on Baychester Avenue was dedicated by His Eminence Cardinal Spellman on May 27th, 1962. It is generally recognized as one of the finest Catholic High School structures in the nation. A student center houses a spacious double gymnasium, cafeteria, auditorium, little theatre, band room and music practice rooms. Other major areas in the building are a student chapel with adjacent offices for spiritual counselling and a central library for 20,000 volumes.

As a Roman Catholic school, Cardinal Spellman High School is dedicated to the Christian teaching of the essential equality of all people as rooted in the fatherhood of God, Christ's love and our supernatural destiny. Thus, with discrimination so repugnant to its nature and mission, Cardinal Spellman High School has not and shall not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin. This applies to all aspects of its operation, including admissions policies, scholarship programs and athletic and other school administered programs.

Accreditation

Accreditation of Cardinal Spellman by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools was announced on December 2nd, 1965. It was renewed in December, 1975. In May of 1963 the school was admitted to the University of the State of New York and thus accredited by the Board of Regents of the State. This accreditation was renewed in 1977, 1982, 1986 and in 1997.
